St Mary’s Magdalene’s Roman Catholic Church, Bexhill on Sea

St Mary Magdalene’s Church is a Roman Catholic Parish Church located on the corner of Sea Road and Magdalen Road, opposite the railway station in Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex. It was founded in 1893 and built in 1907 in the Gothic Revival style. Dedicated to Jesus’ companion Mary Magdalene.

Minerva Building Restoration were instructed to carry out refurbishment works as per scope of works below.

 

Scope of Works

  1. Carry out refurbishment and demolition asbestos survey.
  2. Scaffold was designed and erected to provide a safe working platform to the roof, windows, pointing and structural repairs.
  3. Supply and install Klober clay tile vents to main roof, roof over Baptistry and the roof over West Porch.
  4. Supply and fit new hip and ridge tiles.
  5. Roof repairs to south elevation including new boards and wall plates.
  6. Replacement of decayed timber fascias and battens to South & North elevations.
  7. Remove the cementitious render to the internal vertical face of the parapet walls back to masonry.
  8. Remove vegetation from the gutters clean down and refurbish.
  9. Repointing of south and west elevations using natural hydraulic lime (900m sq)
  10. Carefully brush all stonework to tracery windows internally & externally and carry out stone repairs.
  11. Supply natural stone cross and repair stone joints.
  12. Conservation works undertaken to leaded stained glass windows.
  13. Remove existing perspex window guards from the west porch windows, supply and install new black powder coated stainless steel wire glass window guards.
  14. Existing metal grills were taken off site and powder coated then altered to provide a 75mm leaf gap at the bottom of the protection.

15.Carefully clean the stained glass with distilled water using cotton buds on the stained glass internally on the North alter, South and West Elevations.

  1. Carry out structural repairs to Belfry Stair Tower and helibar works.
  2. Decorate rafter ends, fascias and barge boards including fitting soffit disc vents.
  3. Refurbish joinery to Belfry Louvres, Belfry Stair Tower, Sacristy Door, Plant Room Door, West Porch Doors.
  4. Refurbish metal work, protection grills, gutters, hoppers, downpipes.
  5. Jet wash the south boundary rainwater system which was heavily silted up.
  6. Wire mesh to Belfry tower louvres and internal louvres.
  7. Restoration works carried out to all internal & external tracery windows.
  8. Supply and fit new rainwater goods including hoppers, downpipes, square shoes, swan necks and fixings.
  9. Guano cleaning and pigeon netting works were undertaken.
  10. Sparkle clean on completion.
  11. A full time Site Manager provided for the project from start to finish to ensure the works were completed to programme.
