Project
Refurbishment of the East chapel building at West London crematorium. The chapel was closed throughout the project, during which we carried out a complete overhaul of the room finishes of French polished timber panelling and pews, along with the redecoration of the full chapel and its high ceilings. New heating systems were introduced along with rewire and the installation of a new mains power intake.
Regular meetings were held with the client and their M+E consultant both pre and during contract to discuss design and general project matters and special respect had to be factored into our working day as the adjacent West chapel was still in operation and we had to prevent disturbance to services.
Information on building
Situated in the West London royal borough of Kensington and Chelsea, west London crematorium sits within Kensal rise cemetery and was added in the late 1930’s. The crematorium building consists of two chapels – the East and the West – divided by a glazed atrium which offers entry to either chapel and the gardens of remembrance to the rear.
The two chapels are styled in different ways with the west being in a more contemporary design and the East being traditional.
The chapel has been used for notables such as Ingrid Bergman, Alan Rickman and Freddie Mercury.
Project brief
We were tasked with bringing back a fresh feel to the traditional look of the chapel while embracing modern technology to provide the best efficiency levels coupled with original styles.
Radiant heaters and heated skirting boards were installed while a new lighting system of LED lights within a bespoke timber rail was fitted to enhance the comfort, but all existing features had an overhaul.
Scope of Works
- Plastering and decorating throughout
- Clean and revival of all wood panelling and pews in French polish
- Renew floor coverings in adjacent rooms and strip back original parquet floor in chapel area
- Remove old system and install new heating and boiler system with additional radiant heaters and heated skirting boards
- Rewire electrics and install new main intake
- Overhaul and repairs to glazing throughout chapel
