THISTLE HYDE PARK HOTEL, LONDON, W2
The Hotel is a large elegant mid 19th century Grade II listed property with views that overlook Hyde Park.
Minerva Building Restoration Ltd tendered for and secured this £1.3 million project to undertake the external decoration and roof overhaul work.
Scope of Works
- Full scaffold was provided to the large front and rear elevations. Owing to the need for roof overhaul works, detailed scaffold design drawings were produced before erecting of an 1100m sq temporary roof with associated beamwork was built.
- As the roof works commenced it quickly became obvious that timber trusses, rafters and wall plates were structurally unsound.
- A Structural Engineer was appointed to fully design a new roof support system. The design included a large amount of timber replacement alongside the introduction of steel beams which provided additional support to the roof structure.
- Following the structural repair work the 10 No’ roof areas received new felt / batten and slate coverings.
- During the course of the roofing works a number of flat roof areas were stripped and replaced using liquid coatings securing a 20 year guarantee.
- A large amount of failing leadwork was replaced to the roof dormers, parapet gutters and lead flashings generally.
- Whilst undertaking the preparatory works for the front elevation decoration work it was found that the feature balustrading units were disintegrating and becoming a safety risk. Minerva’s in-house stone masons supplied and fitted new balustrade bottles in readiness for decoration.
- A full window overhaul and decoration programme followed to contract completion.
